Study: Sitting too long at work leads to depression

A new study from the University of Queensland and Victoria in Australia revealed that prolonged sitting at work leads to depression, especially women.

The study found interesting links between long sitting and depression, and sitting for long periods was also linked to an increased risk of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The research showed that women who sit for more than seven hours a day, have a 47% higher risk of showing symptoms of depression, compared to those who sit for four hours or less.

Scientists say that regular doses of exercise fail to compensate for the damage, but one activity has now been proven to resist diseases associated with sitting (standing), as the rotation between sitting and standing leads to burn (200) additional calories on a daily basis, up to 48,000 calories per year, which is the equivalent of riding a 1,500 kilometer bike, swimming 170 kilometers, or running for more than 18 marathons.

In recent years, standing offices have been welcomed as a cure for diseases related to sitting.
